Pirate Queens
Since these pirate queens were truly rebels and outcasts, my inspiration for the design of this book was the xeroxed, collaged punk rock fliers and band posters of the late 1970s.

I moderated a discussion between the author and the illustrator at the Society of Illustrators in New York City in March 2022.
Each chapter had an opener of the pirate queen, a portrait and poem spread and two nonfiction spreads.
For the two nonfictions spreads, we used a lot of archival images but I kept the collaged, xeroxed feeling of the 1970s punk rock scene to make the images fit in with the illustration style and keep the reader's interest.
